can i take a break if i clock out to go out side and do what i want to during an 8 hour shift

i was told i could not,even if i clock out, or i would loose my job. i live and work in the state of mississippi, but my home base office is in tennessee. i am a smoker and would like to have 1 break a day to go out and smoke. they say that i am paid for my breaks and lunch and that i am not allowed to leave the office for any reason for my entire shift. can this be legal?
