can an employer change your hours at will and do they have to provide you with a employee hand boook

i work for a company that i have been with for aprox 1 yr and 8 months up until march 2008 i worked first shift then i was told they would need my help at night 1 worked 12- 8;30 then 2:30-11 now 5p-1:30 a.m. alittle over 24 hours ago i was told i will be needed back on days and let them know when i could do that but no rush but within the next couple of weeks. then today i was asked again when i would be able to come back. after i told him i had to make arrangments for my grand children. can they make me change shifts i am not in a union - this is a world wide fortue 500 company .
