i work for a educational system and i work 8am until 4:00 pm. with no allotted lunch time. my lunch in put im my schedule for 4-5 pm. that means i work 8 straight hours without a lunch and am told that at 4 pm i may leave for the day if i choose. is it legal foran employer to do this? i work in the state of maryland

yes, in a way this is legal. within an 8+ hour period of time, you are allowed by federal law, (2) 15 minute paid breaks during that period. take your lunch during this time. and 1 half hour lunch unpaid, unless you have to work through your lunch, then your employer must pay you for your time. it's legal for them to schedule your lunch at the end of the day, but it is also legal for you to leave at 3:30 and make them, pay you till 4:00, if that makes sense.
